Bitumen Membran

Definition of Bitumen Membrana Membrane is a high-quality bitumen-based waterproofing membrane for flat roofs and low-sloped roofs, as well as underground surfaces like foundations, basements and pools. It is a flexible and reliable solution for waterproofing all types of roofs and foundations.

Membrane is literally called the membrane or the surrounding layer. In the field of building material, the separator or selectively permeable layer is understood when the membrane is called. In the field of waterproofing, membranes are grouped according to the way waterproof materials are applied to the surface. Waterproof products can be applied in the form of a cover, in liquid form or by spraying with a pressurized system. Due to the method of application, other physical or chemical products can be used in addition to the main components in the insulation product.

Membrane is particularly adapted for use as a protective layer in regions where earthquakes can cause groundwater to impact structural strength.

Bituminous waterproofing membranes are produced by modifying bitumen (asphalt) with polymer based plastics and produced with non-wowen spun-bond polyester or glassfiber reinforcement.

Application areas of Membran

Membrane is used in buildings that are exposed to different loads and weather conditions such as bridges, viaducts, especially on the foundation, curtains, basements, gardens, terraces and roofs of buildings, in order to protect the water against adverse effects caused by water and moisture, and to provide a comfortable waterproofing to living spaces.

What is a Bitumen membrane

The product is employs asphalt or thermoplastic elastomer (styrene – butadiene block copolymer sbs), modified asphalt impregnated base, both sides are coated with elastomer or plastic bitumen coverage layer, upper surface fine sand , mineral grains(membrane)material or coverage polyethylene film, lower surfaces fine sand or coverage from polyethylene membrane made waterproofing materials.

Usage areas Bitumen membrane

The product has good waterproof performance and anti-aging performance, and has the characteristics of not flowing at high temperature, not brittle crack at low temperature, simple construction, no pollution, long service life.It is mainly used in the industrial and civil building roofing、Bathroom、basement、pool and other waterproof moistureproof and bridge, parking lot, swimming pool, tunnel, reservoir and other buildings waterproof, moistureproof, steam separation.Impermeability and maintenance of asphalt roofing.sbs Modified asphalt waterproof rolling material is especially suitable for waterproofing of buildings in cold areas and areas with frequent structural deformation.

Bitumen Membrane Types

  • Glass fiber carrier membrane
  • Glass gauze carrier membrane aluminum foil membrane
  • Glass net carrier slated membrane
  • Polyester felt-reinforced membrane
  • Self adhesive membrane

Flat roof membranes are used in both residential and commercial roofing projects. In residential, it is used predominantly for large apartment buildings, garage roofs, and small extensions. It is also increasingly used for larger main roofs in single-family housing with modern designs that integrate flat roofs.
Most large commercial projects such as apartments, warehouses, sports facilities, schools, and hotels utilize membrane roofing on flat roofs. Most of these commercial buildings require roof access for mechanical systems or they have occupied roof terraces, making membrane roofs an ideal cost effective solution.
The two most common types of flat roof membranes are EPDM and PVC. While modified bitumen is also still used, most owners are moving away from asphalt based products due to the environmental and health hazards.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why do you recommend waterproofing?
Because, Water penetrating into structures causes corrosion of steel which yields lower load bearing capacity and even a sudden collapse during a powerful quake. The water causes the concrete to degrade and crack.

The waterproofing application provides not only safety of building but also healthy and comfortable environments by avoiding formation of bacteria and mold, and water from dripping off the roof or ceiling.
How long is the lifetime of bitumen based waterproofing membranes?
The bitumen based waterproofing membranes continuously maintain their performance throughout the useful lifetime of the building if they are selected, detailed, and installed properly.
Where can I use bitumen based waterproofing membranes?
The bitumen based waterproofing membranes are used almost everywhere in buildings where there is water contact.

especially the walls, foundations and ground floors contacting soil as well as foundation walls, balconies, terraces and pitched roofs where the water may accumulate or flood outside the building, and wet spaces such as bathroom, washing basin, WC are general fields of application of bitumen based waterproofing membranes.

Furthermore, the bitumen based waterproofing membranes are also used in water tanks, artificial ponds and pools, retaining walls, concrete flumes, car parks, structures where high stresses are involved such as motorways, railways, bridges and viaducts.
Are bitumen based waterproofing membranes enough for waterproofing?
Bitumen based waterproofing membranes are made for waterproofing and they stop and divert water towards drains even at very low roof pitches.
Are the bitumen based waterproofing membranes applied only on concrete surfaces?
Generally, they are applied on concrete and wooden surfaces. It can also provide a perfect bond on other surfaces.
